Join artist K N Hari Das for an immersive introduction to the art of Pen & Wash Travel Sketching. This workshop is designed for beginners as well as artists looking to bring more spontaneity and confidence into their sketching practice.
Pen & Wash is a an efficient approach to sketching on location ( This planned session is a studio session). By combining expressive line work with one or two simple watercolor washes, artists can capture the character of a place quickly and effectively. It is an ideal medium for travel journals, sketchbooks, and urban sketching.
Everyone receives personal guidance throughout the session. All materials will be provided for use during the workshop, and participants will take their completed artwork home. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own sketchbooks if they wish to work in them.
Materials Used:
• Paints – Renesans / Holbein / White Nights
• Paper – Arches
Workshop Structure
1. Overview & Foundational Approach
An introduction to Hari’s approach to Pen & Wash Travel Sketching, including:
•Understanding perspective in a simple and practical way
•Simplifying complex subjects into clear sketchable forms
•Using line work effectively to establish structure and character
•Applying limited watercolor washes for depth and atmosphere
•Creating lively sketches without overworking details
•Essential tips for sketchbook-based travel sketching
2. Demonstration Session
A detailed live demonstration covering the complete process—from observation and composition to pen work and watercolor washes. Participants are encouraged to ask questions throughout the demonstration.
3. Guided Practice
Participants will create their own pen-and-wash sketch under Hari’s guidance. Individual attention is provided throughout the session to help build confidence, observation skills, and sketching techniques.
4. Q&A & Feedback
An open discussion session with constructive feedback on participant work, clarification of concepts, and practical tips for developing a regular sketching practice.
